Paleoecology of Late Cretaceous Coccolithophores: Insights From the Shallow?Marine Record
نویسندگان
چکیده
Coccolithophores, common primary producers in Mesozoic, Cenozoic, and present oceans, are significant components of the earth’s biogeochemical cycles. Being most productive calcifying organism on earth, their carbonate oozes play a major role fixing CO2, thereby forming important long-term CO2 sink throughout last 100 Ma. Our understanding fossil ancestors is mainly based data from chalk sequences. Generally, Cretaceous chalks were deposited at water depths ?200 m under stable, pelagic conditions. Here we report remarkably diverse coccolithophore assemblages Cenomanian-Campanian (100-72 Ma) nearshore deposits, with estimated ?40 m. For interpreting findings broader paleoenvironmental context, additionally analyzed contemporaneous material Santonian-Campanian (86-72 interval. Highly associations (50–81 species/sample) characterize setting, while samples less (43–54 species/sample). The absolute abundances coccoliths setting by factor 2–10 lower than those chalk, diversity indices 20%–30% higher (Shannon Index = 2.94–3.46) sediments. presence highly communities settings provides new insights into paleoecology evolution paleoceanography Late Cretaceous. revise traditional view coccolithophores being typical open ocean dwellers. Extreme greenhouse world characterized environmental conditions equating hemipelagic realm but supplying larger variety ecological niches.

Taxonomic Composition, Paleoecology and Biostratigraphy of Late Cretaceous Diatoms from Devon Island, Nunavut, Canadian High Arctic
Diatoms are the most diverse group of algae, playing a major role in global carbon and silicon cycles (Kidder and Erwin, 2001; Armbrust, 2009) and inhabiting virtually any environment that provides moisture and sunlight (Mann, 1999). Thus, they offer important information to help reconstruct paleoen-vironments and clarify stratigraphic relationships. Their strati-graphic range extends down at l...
متن کاملVertebrate Paleontology of the Cloverly Formation (Lower Cretaceous), II: Paleoecology
Vertebrate microfossil assemblages in terrestrial formations are a promising source of data on the structure of fossil metacommunities. However, the degree to which these deposits capture true, metacommunity-level samples is unknown. Individual deposits may be biased in ways that limit their utility for intraand inter-formation comparisons. This study describes the composition of ten vertebrate...

In the present study, Kabir kuh Section, related to the Seymareh or Lopha Limestone member (Gurpi Formation) have been Selected. The member has yielded a rich echinoid fauna and 21 species of Echinoid belonging to 14 genera are recognized and described. The Kabir Kuh section yielded two regular echinoid taxa: Salenia nutrix and Goniopygus superbus, one holectypoid taxa: Coptodiscus noemiae, two...
متن کاملBiostratigraphy and paleoecology of an unusual palynological record from the Aquidauana Formation, Late Pennsylvanian of Paraná Basin.
The Aquidauana Formation is a Permo-Carboniferous sedimentary unit, widely stratigraphicaly distributed in the northwestern and northern portions of the Paraná Basin. However, little paleontological data is available from this formation, preventing accurate biostratigraphic and paleoecological interpretations. An abundant, diversified and well preserved assemblage of palynomorphs was recognized...
متن کاملSeasonality and Paleoecology of the Late Cretaceous Multi-Taxa Vertebrate Assemblage of “Lo Hueco” (Central Eastern Spain)
Isotopic studies of multi-taxa terrestrial vertebrate assemblages allow determination of paleoclimatic and paleoecological aspects on account of the different information supplied by each taxon. The late Campanian-early Maastrichtian "Lo Hueco" Fossil-Lagerstätte (central eastern Spain), located at a subtropical paleolatitude of ~31°N, constitutes an ideal setting to carry out this task due to ...
